Second-year marketing students often learn about SEO from slides and textbooks, but many struggle when it comes to applying those concepts to a real website. This SEO website project case study documents my experience building the Moc Tam Nha website (moctamnha.id.vn), a simulated e-commerce platform focused on agarwood products and feng shui lifestyle content. Through this project, I experimented with keyword research, SEO content writing, website structure design, and manual indexing using Google Search Console. If you are learning SEO or building your first website, this case study shares practical lessons from my early experimentation and shows how a simple student project can become a valuable learning journey in digital marketing.

1.1 Why I built a simulated e-commerce website

When I first started learning digital marketing and SEO, most of the knowledge I encountered came from lectures, articles, and online tutorials. While those resources explained the concepts clearly, I quickly realized that understanding SEO theory was very different from actually implementing it on a real website.

Search engine optimization involves many moving parts: keyword research, website structure, content creation, technical setup, and performance monitoring. Reading about these elements is useful, but without applying them in practice, it is difficult to truly understand how they work together.

That realization became the starting point for the Moc Tam Nha project.

The goal of this project was simple: build a simulated e-commerce website and use it as an experimental environment to learn SEO in a practical way. Instead of focusing only on theory, I wanted to experience the full process of creating a website, structuring content, publishing SEO articles, and observing how Google indexes and evaluates web pages.

Another motivation behind the project was to strengthen my digital marketing portfolio. Many entry-level marketing roles expect candidates to demonstrate hands-on experience with SEO tools and website management. By building my own website project, I could document the process and show evidence of real experimentation rather than simply listing theoretical knowledge.

The Moc Tam Nha website therefore served multiple purposes. It was a learning platform for SEO experimentation, a collaborative project with my team members, and a portfolio case study that reflects my early journey into search engine optimization.

Although the project started as a simple academic assignment, it eventually became an important milestone in my development as a digital marketing learner. It taught me not only the mechanics of SEO but also the mindset required to explore new tools, solve problems independently, and continuously improve through experimentation.

1.2 Overview of the Moc Tam Nha website

The Moc Tam Nha website was designed as a simulated e-commerce platform built using the Web30s website builder. The concept behind the website was to create an online store that showcases agarwood products while also providing educational content related to lifestyle and spiritual well-being.

The structure of the website followed a typical e-commerce layout. The homepage introduced the brand concept and highlighted featured products. Product pages displayed different agarwood items, while the blog section provided informational articles designed to attract organic search traffic.

Although the website was not intended to operate as a fully commercial store, its architecture mirrored the structure of real online businesses. This allowed the project to simulate realistic digital marketing scenarios, such as optimizing product pages, writing informational blog content, and organizing categories in a way that supports search engine crawling.

One important aspect of the project was experimenting with website structure. SEO performance is heavily influenced by how content is organized and how easily search engines can navigate through the website. By designing the website architecture from the beginning, I had the opportunity to explore how sitemap planning and navigation structure affect search indexing.

In addition to content creation, the project also involved setting up essential analytics tools such as Google Search Console and Google Analytics. These tools allowed me to monitor search impressions, indexing status, and basic traffic data, providing valuable insights into how search engines interact with a newly created website.

Through these experiments, the Moc Tam Nha website became more than just a simple class project. It became a practical laboratory for learning how SEO works in real environments.

1.3 Target market and product niche

The niche selected for the Moc Tam Nha website focused on agarwood products, including incense, bracelets, and other items associated with spiritual and feng shui traditions.

Agarwood holds cultural significance in many Asian countries, including Vietnam. It is commonly used in spiritual rituals, meditation practices, and lifestyle products designed to promote relaxation and positive energy. Because of these associations, agarwood products often attract consumers who are interested in mindfulness, spirituality, and traditional culture.

The target audience for the website was therefore defined as individuals who appreciate feng shui lifestyle products and spiritual well-being. These users are typically interested in learning about the cultural meaning of agarwood, how it is used in daily life, and how to select authentic products.

From an SEO perspective, this niche also provides opportunities for informational content. Many people search online for topics such as the meaning of agarwood, the benefits of agarwood incense, or how to recognize genuine agarwood products. These questions create search demand that can be addressed through educational blog articles.

By combining product pages with informative blog content, the website attempted to simulate a common e-commerce SEO strategy where informational articles attract search traffic and guide users toward product pages.

Although the Moc Tam Nha website was primarily built as a learning project, the niche selection allowed the project to explore how content marketing and SEO can support niche online businesses.

2. Building the Website Structure and SEO Foundation

2.1 Designing the website sitemap and navigation structure

The first step in building the Moc Tam Nha website was designing the overall sitemap and navigation structure.

Website architecture is an important element of SEO because it determines how search engines crawl and understand the relationship between different pages. A clear structure helps both users and search engines navigate the website efficiently.

The sitemap of the Moc Tam Nha website consisted of several core sections:

  • Homepage
  • Product pages
  • Blog section
  • Contact page

The homepage served as the main entry point of the website, introducing the brand concept and directing visitors toward other sections of the site. Product pages displayed the available agarwood items, while the blog section hosted informational articles related to agarwood culture and lifestyle.

At this early stage of learning SEO, my understanding of advanced site architecture was still limited. The structure I designed was therefore relatively simple compared to large commercial websites. However, simplicity can also be beneficial because it makes the site easier to crawl and maintain.

Even though I did not yet fully understand concepts like topic clusters or internal linking strategies, creating the sitemap still helped me develop an awareness of how website structure affects search engine behavior.

This experience reinforced the idea that SEO is not only about writing content but also about organizing information in a logical and accessible way.

2.2 Learning keyword research using Google Keyword Planner

Keyword research was one of the first SEO skills I attempted to learn during the project.

To identify potential search queries related to agarwood products, I used Google Keyword Planner. This tool allowed me to explore search terms related to my niche and estimate their approximate search volume.

The keyword research process involved several steps. First, I identified basic keywords related to agarwood, incense, and feng shui products. Then I expanded those keywords using suggestions generated by the tool.

For example, users searching for agarwood products may use queries such as:

  • what is agarwood
  • benefits of agarwood incense
  • agarwood bracelet meaning

These keywords provided ideas for potential blog articles that could attract search traffic.

At that time, my keyword research process was still relatively basic. I mainly focused on identifying relevant keywords rather than performing deeper analysis such as search intent classification or keyword clustering.

However, the process of exploring keywords still helped me understand how search engines connect user queries with website content. It also demonstrated how content ideas can be derived directly from real search behavior.

This realization was important because it shifted my perspective on content creation. Instead of writing articles based purely on intuition, I began to see how keyword research can guide the content planning process.

2.3 Writing SEO content for blog articles

Content creation was one of the most time-consuming parts of the Moc Tam Nha project.

During the project, I wrote approximately ten SEO-focused blog articles. Although some of these articles are no longer available on the website today, they played an important role in helping me practice content writing for search engines.

Each article focused on a specific topic related to agarwood or feng shui lifestyle practices. The goal was to provide useful information for readers while also targeting specific keywords discovered during the research phase.

At that time, my understanding of SEO content writing was still developing. I mainly focused on including keywords in the article title and within the body text, while trying to maintain a logical structure for the content.

Even though the articles were relatively simple, writing them helped me develop an awareness of how content quality influences search visibility. It also taught me that writing for SEO requires balancing two goals: providing value to readers and ensuring that search engines can understand the topic of the page.

Through this process, I began to appreciate the importance of creating clear, informative, and well-structured content that answers real user questions.

2.4 Basic onpage SEO implementation

In addition to writing content, I also experimented with basic onpage SEO optimization techniques.

At the time of the project, my knowledge of SEO was still at an introductory level. The main elements I focused on optimizing were the page title and the meta description.

The title tag is one of the most important onpage SEO elements because it helps search engines understand the topic of the page and influences how the page appears in search results. Similarly, the meta description provides a short summary that can encourage users to click on the page.

Although I did not yet implement more advanced techniques such as internal linking strategies or entity optimization, optimizing these basic elements still helped improve the overall structure of the website.

This stage of the project represented my first attempt at applying SEO concepts in a real environment. Even simple optimizations provided valuable insights into how search engines interpret webpage metadata.

3. Technical Setup and Website Indexing

3.1 Connecting Google Search Console and Analytics

To monitor the performance of the website, I connected the domain to Google Search Console and Google Analytics.

Google Search Console allowed me to submit the website sitemap, track indexing status, and monitor search impressions for different pages. This tool is essential for SEO because it provides direct feedback from Google about how a website is being crawled and evaluated.

Google Analytics, on the other hand, provides information about user behavior. It allows website owners to observe how visitors interact with the site, which pages receive traffic, and how users navigate through the website.

Setting up these tools was an important milestone in the project because it transformed the website from a static platform into a measurable digital environment.

Instead of guessing whether the website was visible in search results, I could now observe real data related to indexing and search visibility.

3.2 Submitting sitemap and indexing pages

One of the most exciting parts of the project was the process of indexing the website on Google.

After publishing the website content, I submitted the sitemap through Google Search Console. The sitemap helps search engines understand the structure of the website and discover newly published pages.

In addition to submitting the sitemap, I also used the URL inspection tool to request indexing for individual pages. This manual process allowed Google to crawl and evaluate the content more quickly.

Watching the indexing process was a valuable learning experience. It demonstrated how search engines gradually discover, analyze, and include web pages in their search results.

Even though the website was relatively small, seeing the pages appear in Google’s index was a rewarding moment that confirmed the effectiveness of the technical setup.

3.3 Monitoring keyword rankings and search impressions

After the pages were indexed, I began monitoring their performance through Google Search Console.

The search performance report provided insights into impressions and keyword rankings for different pages. Although the website was still new and the rankings were not very high, some pages started appearing within the top 100 search results.

For a beginner SEO project, this was an encouraging outcome. It demonstrated that Google was able to crawl the content, understand the topics of the pages, and include them in search results.

These early results reinforced the importance of SEO fundamentals such as keyword targeting, content relevance, and proper indexing.

While the website did not generate large amounts of traffic, the fact that it appeared in search results confirmed that the project successfully implemented the basic steps of SEO.

4. Lessons from My First SEO Website Project

4.1 Learning SEO through real experimentation

The most valuable outcome of the Moc Tam Nha project was the opportunity to learn SEO through real experimentation.

Instead of simply reading about SEO strategies, I was able to test them directly on a website. This hands-on approach helped transform abstract concepts into practical knowledge.

By building the website, writing content, and observing how search engines responded, I gained a deeper understanding of the relationship between website structure, content quality, and search visibility.

This experience confirmed that SEO is not something that can be mastered through theory alone. It requires experimentation, patience, and continuous learning.

4.2 Challenges during the project

Like many beginner projects, the Moc Tam Nha website also faced several challenges.

One of the main difficulties was the gap in SEO knowledge. At the beginning of the project, I was still unfamiliar with many advanced SEO concepts such as internal linking strategies, content clusters, and technical optimization.

Keyword research was also challenging because identifying relevant search terms requires practice and analytical thinking.

In addition, the website platform itself imposed certain limitations, which sometimes made it difficult to implement more advanced SEO features.

Despite these obstacles, the project still provided valuable learning opportunities that helped me gradually improve my understanding of SEO.

4.3 Understanding the importance of SEO structure

Another important lesson from the project was the significance of website structure.

SEO is not only about writing content or inserting keywords. It also involves designing a logical architecture that allows search engines to understand how pages are connected.

Even though my initial structure was relatively simple, the experience made me realize that a well-planned site architecture can significantly improve search engine crawling and user navigation.

This realization later influenced my approach to SEO projects, encouraging me to think more systematically about website organization and content relationships.

4.4 Future improvements for the website

If I were to rebuild the Moc Tam Nha website today, several improvements could be implemented.

One improvement would be developing a clearer keyword strategy that groups related keywords into topic clusters. This approach helps search engines better understand the thematic structure of the website.

Another improvement would involve implementing internal linking between blog articles and product pages. Internal links create connections between content and improve both user navigation and search engine crawling.

Additionally, building backlinks from external websites could strengthen the website’s authority and improve its search rankings.

By applying these improvements, the website could evolve from a simple learning project into a more comprehensive SEO experiment.

Conclusion

The Moc Tam Nha project represents an important milestone in my journey of learning search engine optimization. Through building a simulated e-commerce website, experimenting with keyword research, and monitoring search indexing, I gained practical insights into how SEO works in real digital environments.

Although the project began as a basic student assignment, it ultimately provided a foundation for developing a more systematic understanding of website optimization and digital marketing strategy.
